The client

My old schoolmate Vladimir Yashunksy's brother Alexei worked at MIREA (a technical university) and required a cheap way to organize some PDF files into a mini-library in their intranet. There was no need for any outstanding design, just plain functionality.

  • Restricted library does not allow anonymous access to the materials stored.
  • Simple search by category, author, title and/or description of the material is supported.
  • Users who have editorial rights can manage the documents and their properties, and every such action is logged to prevent possible vandalism.

The whole stack. Had to make the cheapest product possible that satisfied the requirements that are the features highlighted above.

Technical info

  • Small database structure with only 4 tables.
  • The library is packed into a single index file, mod_rewrite caters for normal links.
  • There are two types of extended privileges. User management is available for administrators, categories and books management – for editors.
